In the Fall, bears enter a state called hyperphagia. This incessant hunger drives them to consume up to 20,000 calories a day. In the Wild, they do this to pack on some weight before hibernation. This drive to consume can increase the chance of bringing them into contact with humans. Bears in captivity, such as Juniper at the Woodland Park Zoo, don't experience food scarcity, which typically triggers hibernation. Instead, they experience torpor, a state akin to that of sleepy teenagers.
