Four gray wolves arrived at Woodland Park Zoo a few weeks ago. They have settled in after being given some space to acclimatize to their new surroundings. These six-year-old males are brothers and were born at the California Wolf Center. They are a subspecies of the Gray Wolf, known as the Mexican Wolf, and as such, are critically endangered. The Zoo is a participant in the SAFE initiative, saving animals from extinction. The Mexican Wolf once roamed throughout the Southwest.

A rare snow day delighted the animals at the Woodland Park Zoo. Juniper, a Coastal Alaskan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), came to the Zoo after being orphaned as a cub. She is becoming increasingly active by the day as her body adjust after coming out of Torpor (hibernation).

The hardiest animals at the Woodland Park Zoo shrug off the rainy start to spring in the PNW. The Roosevelt Elk (Cervus canadensis roosevelti) was particularly unphased. Also known as Olympic Elk, they are a subspecies that call the PNW temperate rainforests home. Their protection was one of the primary reasons for the establishment of Olympic National Park in Washington State.

Fern, a 4-year-old rescued grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), relaxes in her habitat at the Woodland Park Zoo. Rescued from Montana as an orphaned cub in 2022, Fern serves as a wildlife ambassador. To aid in foraging and digging for roots or insects, grizzly bears feature prominent, gently curved front claws that can grow up to 4 inches long, which are distinctively light-colored and blunt compared to the shorter, sharper claws of black bears. Though brown bears are listed globally as a species of least concern, grizzly bear populations in the lower 48 states and regions like Washington's Selkirk Mountains remain designated as critically endangered and threatened.

A Canadian Lynx (Lynx canadensis) explores its habitat at the Woodland Park Zoo. The close-up interaction with the animal shows off its distinctive tufts of fur on the ears and large paws, which act like snowshoes for visitors. The Lynx, part of the Living Northwest Trail, is endangered in Washington State.

A golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) looks out from its enclosure in the Tropical Rain Forest exhibit at Woodland Park Zoo. Native to the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil, these endangered primates have been part of a long-standing conservation success story at the zoo, which contributed some of the first captive-bred family groups for reintroduction into the wild.

A spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) explores its newly introduced habitat in the African Savanna section at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington. The zoo welcomed two young male spotted hyenas, three-year-old Razi and one-year-old Mosi, in May 2026. This marks the first time the species has been part of the zoo in 25 years. Highly intelligent and native to sub-Saharan Africa, spotted hyenas are accomplished apex pack hunters and key ecological scavengers. While they share physical and behavioral traits with canines, hyenas belong to the suborder Feliformia and are evolutionarily much more closely related to felines and mongooses.

Fitz, a 7-year-old jaguar (Panthera onca), prowls through his festively decorated enclosure at the Woodland Park Zoo. Jaguars are solitary animals, except when mothers are caring for their cubs. They are naturally curious and have large home ranges. In the wild, jaguars can be found in Mexico, Central America, and South America, with occasional sightings as far north as the southwestern states of Arizona and New Mexico. They are the largest cat species in the Americas and the third-largest worldwide, known for their powerful bite.

Mexican Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) at the Woodland Park Zoo warm themselves in the sun on a brisk day. Mexican Wolves are a subspecies of Gray Wolf (Canis lupus), and in New Mexico and Arizona, their numbers have increased in the last two years from 286 to 319. A comprehensive captive breeding program brought the Mexican Wolf back from the brink of extinction in the 1980s.

Juniper, a Coastal Brown Bear (Ursus arctos gyas), watches her surroundings. As the leaves change, a bear's activity levels change as well. Gone are the hyperactive days of hyperphage, where bears are in a constant state of hunger. As we get closer to winter, bears lounge, play, and ponder their surroundings as they wind down into a state of torpor. Bears that have enough food do not hibernate but will become inactive.

Carson the resident Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) at the Woodland Park Zoo explores his new home in the Forest Trailhead exhibit. The 11 year old Red Panda now has two stories of vertical space to climb. The Forest Trailhead is a state of the art exhibit and opens May 1st. It features a treetop canopy path, a habitat gallery and conservation action called “forests for all”. A decade in the making this exhibit highlights conservation of 20 species that call forests home.
